Soil microbiology is the study of microorganisms in soil , their functions, and how they affect soil properties. It is believed that between two and four billion years ago, the first ancient bacteria and microorganisms came about on Earth's oceans.

Relationships between soil microbial diversity and soil function are the subject of much debate.

Effects of soil management systems on soil microbial activity, bulk density and chemical properties 1. The no-tillage system also provided an improvement in bulk density and chemical properties of the soil. Hence, the no-tillage management system could be an alternative for the conservation and maintenance of physical and chemical conditions and the productive potential of "cerrado" soils. Index terms: soil chemicophysical properties, biomass, soil deterioration, soil conservation. Introduction "Cerrado" vegetation fits into the category of the savanna formation. After the 's, an extensive occupation process started on several areas of Brazilian "cerrado" which involved intensive agricultural, pasture and reforestation activities.

A plethora of methods have been developed over the few last decades to enable a better understanding of the ecology of soil microbial communities and their roles in soil functioning. However, there is generally considerable variation both subtle and more extensive in the actual realisation of these methods, and limited efforts have been devoted to their standardisation, despite this being crucial to underpin data comparison and integration. Ensuring comparable data across studies through standardisation is arguably best-practice, as well as necessary to effectively meet the objectives of various schemas, which require assessment of the consequences of the global change and intensification of human activities on the functioning of the soil ecosystem and its biological diversity. This article presents an overview of the existing and forthcoming ISO standards in soil microbiology and highlights possible future research efforts to be undertaken for developing new standards. We also discuss some practical and theoretical bottlenecks and hurdles that have limited standardisation in soil microbiology up to now. Microorganisms in soil ecosystems are ubiquitous, abundant, diverse and essential for many soil functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling, plant productivity and climate regulation Whitman et al.

In recent years, rapid technological advances and changes in agricultural management have taken place. These have yielded benefits to society but have also generated new and significant environmental problems. Novel questions and challenges relating to agricultural practice and soil microbial ecology, ecotoxicology, biotechnology, and bioremediation must be addressed. As a consequence, the fields of soil microbiology and biochemistry have been highlighted. This book provides a modern, authoritative, and comprehensive collection of methods for the study of soil microbiology and biochemistry. Classical and modern, aerobic and anerobic, laboratory and field-based methods are presented.

Soil biological properties and fungal diversity under conservation agriculture in Indo-Gangetic Plains of India. A field experiment was undertaken to evaluate the effect of conservation agriculture CA based management on soil biological properties, and on fungal diversity and abundance after 5 years of continuous cultivation. Treatments included four crop managements viz. Full rice, maize, and mungbean crop residue and anchored wheat residue were recycled in CA-based managements, while CT-based management was without any residue. This study clearly showed that CA with all three proven principles no-tillage, residue retention and crop diversification in maize-wheat-mungbean system resulted in higher microbial activities, fungal diversity and species richness compared to other cereal based management systems. Furthermore, this risk is intensified with in-situ burning of crop residues which hampered the soil biological activities and microbial diversity Lohan et al. To overcome formidable problems of the RW system in South Asia, conservation agriculture CA has emerged as an important alternative to conventional RW system.

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of increasing doses of agricultural gypsum on the quality of the soil biochemical attributes in coffee cultivation Coffea arabica L. Soil samples were collected in two collections dry and rainy season , at 0 — 10 cm depth of a Oxisol, submitted to doses 0 GSA ; 3. TOC showed no differences between treatments. The enzymatic activities of Phosphatase and the FDA showed no differences between treatments.
