Aesthetics covers both natural and artificial sources of aesthetic experience and judgment. It considers what happens in our minds when we engage with aesthetic objects or environments such as in viewing visual art, listening to music, reading poetry, experiencing a play, exploring nature, and so on. The philosophy of art specifically studies how artists imagine, create, and perform works of art, as well as how people use, enjoy, and criticize their art.

What a splendid book! Reading it is a joy, and for me, at least, continuing reading it became compulsive. Chandrasekhar is a distinguished astrophysicist and every one of the lectures bears the hallmark of all his work: precision,MoreWhat a splendid book!

A rationalist and realist model of scientific revolutions will be constructed by reference to two categories of criteria of theory-evaluation, denominated indicators of truth and of beauty. Whereas indicators of truth are formulated a priori and thus unite science in the pursuit of verisimilitude, aesthetic criteria are inductive constructs which lag behind the progression of theories in truthlikeness. Revolutions occur when the evaluative divergence between the two categories of criteria proves too wide to be recomposed or overlooked. This model of revolutions depends upon a substantial new treatment of aesthetic criteria in science with which much of the paper will therefore be occupied. The seven lectures collected in this volume present my general thoughts pertaining to the motivations in the pursuit of science and to the patterns of scientific creativity. While the first of these lectures was given forty years ago under a special circumstance I shall presently describe , the remaining six were given in the decade following As such, they may illustrate the changing maturing? All of the lectures were prepared with care and attention to details and phrasing. They were, in fact, read on the occasions; the printed lectures are the unaltered original texts apart from the elimination of some preliminary material. The lectures fall in, roughly, two categories.

Fowler for " His mathematical treatment of stellar evolution yielded many of the current theoretical models of the later evolutionary stages of massive stars and black holes. Chandrasekhar worked on a wide variety of physical problems in his lifetime, contributing to the contemporary understanding of stellar structure , white dwarfs , stellar dynamics , stochastic process , radiative transfer , the quantum theory of the hydrogen anion , hydrodynamic and hydromagnetic stability, turbulence , equilibrium and the stability of ellipsoidal figures of equilibrium , general relativity , mathematical theory of black holes and theory of colliding gravitational waves. He showed that the mass of a white dwarf could not exceed 1. Chandrasekhar revised the models of stellar dynamics first outlined by Jan Oort and others by considering the effects of fluctuating gravitational fields within the Milky Way on stars rotating about the galactic centre. His solution to this complex dynamical problem involved a set of twenty partial differential equations, describing a new quantity he termed " dynamical friction ", which has the dual effects of decelerating the star and helping to stabilize clusters of stars. Chandrasekhar extended this analysis to the interstellar medium, showing that clouds of galactic gas and dust are distributed very unevenly.

ISBN: The author of this book is a distinguished , Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist. It is not surprising, therefore , that there is much in his work that the nonscientist will not understand.

Her research focuses on the history of modern philosophy, in particular the philosophy of Kant, as well as questions in philosophy of science, philosophy of biology, and aesthetics. She spent the last three years as a Lecturer at the University of East Anglia before moving to Cambridge in October I suggest that a satisfactory answer to this question should account for the apparent attraction that aesthetic considerations seem to have for scientists, while also explaining the apparent instability of the link between the beauty of a theory and its success.
