From Film Form to Perceptual Environment. I have been slowly returning to cinema from long visit to Islamic art and philosophy: Enfoldment and Infinity. There I learned: once you suspend figurative image making, a world of creativity opens up. Large-scale forms, such as figures and narrative, cramp the creative energy of the lines and colors that compose them. But as you know, Islamic art is often aniconic.

This is a book full of imagination and theory, restlessly refusing to remain in the usual continental, philosophic, or chronological borders, continuously reimagining contemporary abstraction as a profoundly Muslim visual discourse. With this book, Laura Marks makes an original and important contribution to understanding the aesthetics of contemporary media culture and its hidden Islamic genealogies. There remains no substantial reason to declare our culture and technologies of communication the most advanced in the world. Chapter by chapter, it becomes more evident that some of the most important paradigms like algorithms, pixels, morphs, or even virtual reality and artificial life have not been originally generated by the Occident, but through L'Age d'Or of the Orient, especially Mesopotamia with Baghdad in its center. Enfoldment and Infinity

The dome is composed of a multitude of tiny, pixel-like cells known as muquarna. But I had little sense of just how amazing this book was going to be. How sameness can give rise to diversity: Interactive architecture that changes shape as you move within it, my own photograph, from the great mosque of Cordoba, Spain. Building upon a Deleuzian ontology, and making use of C. Peirce and Henri Bergson as primary interlocutors, Marks develops a series of links between these contemporary philosophers, and the algoritmicity that links new media art, computation, and various forms of Islamic art, architecture, and philosophy. More than a work about art and architecture, or even new media, this is a work about our age and its increasingly algorithmic foundations. Marks starts off her work by describing her ontology of enfoldment.

From Leonardo. Tracing the connections—both visual and philosophical—between new media art and classical Islamic art. In both classical Islamic art and contemporary new media art, one point can unfold to reveal an entire universe. A fourteenth-century dome decorated with geometric complexity and a new media work that shapes a dome from programmed beams of light: both can inspire feelings of immersion and transcendence. In Enfoldment and Infinity , Laura Marks traces the strong similarities, visual and philosophical, between these two kinds of art. Marks proposes an aesthetics of unfolding and enfolding in which image, information, and the infinite interact: image is an interface to information, and information such as computer code or the words of the Qur'an is an interface to the infinite.

What are the parallels and relations between Islamic art and New Media art? That is the main question Laura U. The title of her book is just as alluring and bold as her topic. During the first two chapters her motivation of the title becomes clear. Enfoldment is a term she borrows from quantum physics and Deleuze and infinity is one of the main topics of her book. I will come back to this later.

Book review: Enfoldment and Infinity by Laura U. Marks

Media theorist Laura U. Marks is able to elaborate connections between such disparate art forms as ancient Islamic calligraphy and computer-generated vectors, Persian carpets and neobaroque films, and the pixillated digitality of modern technology and fana ', the self-eclipsing ecstasy of Islamic mysticism. Although certainly distinct from one another, these examples bear traces of a common origin that manifests itself to discerning viewers. This book contributes to a growing field of scholarship on neobaroque elements in both classical Islamic and contemporary computer-generated art and media, which includes recent works by Timothy Murray, Angela Ndalianis,

Imagine you are gazing up at Hemisphere — , an artwork by Ulf Langheinrich. The experience is hypnotic and overwhelming. It is also collective, for each viewer is aware of other viewers ensconced in the beanbag chairs Langheinrich provides, each lost in his or her perceptual space. Its brick decoration performs a spinning firmament of aston- ishing geometric complexity. From a whirling rosette of sixteen petals in the center radiates a series of concentric zigzags—as though God had thrown a rock into the water, creating ripples.
