I was hoping it would have medication trials and outcomes but it focused on therapy techniques instead. This book provides a look at psychological disorders in children and adolescents by examining case studies through the context of the DSM-V diagnostic manual.

The book is separated into chapters looking at cases used to illustrate diagnosis and treatment of disorders according to a category or constellation of diagnoses. This book would be a useful graduate level textbook for clinical psychology. It provides a helpful examination of how the DSM-V currently defines and categorizes a wide spectrum of patterns of pathology - learning disorders, neurological and developmental disorders, mood disorders, anxiety and trauma based disorders, and more.

The book presents real cases to give you a set of examples of how clients or patients may present and how the process of making diagnoses and planning treatment unfolds.

Unfortunately, from my perspective and experience, the field hasn't progressed much since I complete my graduate studies in counseling psychology a couple of decades ago. The mainstream treatment approaches remain limited and influenced by an orthodoxy that is attached to pharmacology and cognitive behavioral interventions rather than a holistic and systemic understanding of mind-body healing, somatic therapies, energy therapies, meditation and spiritual practices, nutrition, family constellations, and the underlying role of how children adapt to stress and trauma with those adaptations leading toward the symptoms diagnosed as pathological conditions.

While this type of book represents a useful look at how the fields of psychology and psychiatry identify and treat mental health difficulties it also reflects the bias of limiting paradigms and the neglect of integrating more holistic worldviews and newer findings in the treatment of these issues. One other limitation I found was that the book uses a very small font, so individuals with vision issues may have to strain to read the text in this book.

Compared to other psychopathology texts this book is fairly well-designed and helpful, however my own experience has been that it is important to move beyond the mainstream treatment approaches to be more effective as a clinician, so studying a text such as this does not enable someone to be particularly proficient in providing therapy.

Therapy is in some ways an intuitive art rather than a science, and even labeling psychological patterns and behaviors as pathology can become counterproductive when relating to a client and seeking to support healing and personal growth in that client. Using case studies is a positive step toward looking at the unique stories and needs of clients, but I'd like to see instructional resources that foster even more integrative and in-depth approaches to treatment.

One person found this helpful. Working in education I experience some baffling behavior from students at times. Sadly, these are often students who have experienced the kind of traumas that most adults will never experience and suffer from psychological and behavioral disorders.

Knowing how to approach, teach, and build up these students can be a daunting path of trial and error. I found this book to be helpful in understanding how some of these children have developed their patterns, behaviors, and coping mechanisms.

It has also given insight on how to nurture them while they are in my care. This book is well organized. I liked reviewing the caw studies. They aptly illustrated knowledge and understanding in real world situation. I work in criminal justice and this book amplified my understanding of the assessment and diagnostic process. Formulating effective treatment plans requires an understanding of how a problem is identified and how the behaviors can be modified or mitigated. An interesting read.

Utilizing a developmental psychopathology approach, the book explores the emergence of disorders over time, describes the risks and protective factors that influence developmental processes and trajectories, and examines child psychopathology in relation to typical development while considering each family's sociocultural context. Offering current, relevant, and practical scientific information in every chapter, the book helps students develop the understanding they need to make informed decisions about the welfare of their families, schools, communities, and society.
