Crystalline materials mainly metals and alloys , but also stoichiometric salts and other materials are made up of solid regions of ordered matter atoms placed in one of a number of ordered formations called Bravais lattices.

Crystal defect , imperfection in the regular geometrical arrangement of the atoms in a crystalline solid. These imperfections result from deformation of the solid , rapid cooling from high temperature, or high-energy radiation X-rays or neutrons striking the solid. Located at single points, along lines, or on whole surfaces in the solid, these defects influence its mechanical, electrical, and optical behaviour. Point defects include the Frenkel type, the Schottky type, and the impurity type. The Frenkel defect involves a single ion, which is displaced from its normal lattice point and shifts to a nearby interstice, or space, between atoms in the lattice.

In this chapter, the author intends to present the basic concepts to understand the diffraction phenomena observed in crystals of various degrees of perfection.
